The tradition of brides wearing a garter dates back to the 14th century Europe. It is believed that people who were jealous of the bride's good fortune would often try to grab at her dress to tear from it a lucky swatch of cloth. Later, people would simply gather around the bride and try to remove her garter for the same reason. The bride would also throw her stocking for good luck. This eventually evolved into the bride throwing a bouquet to unmarried guests at the wedding.
